Solutions for the

Woodworking

Industry

Woodworking
APPLICATIONS

Is Your Ductwork and Sawdust Collection Holding Back Plant Performance?

US Duct offers sawdust collection ductwork solutions engineered specifically for commercial and industrial woodworking facilities.

Woodworking facilities have unique airflow, safety, and performance demands. US Duct knows these environments well and engineers solutions for system performance, operational efficiency, maximum uptime, and long-term reliability.
THE Problem

Are Your Dust Collection Systems Actually Mitigating Risk?

In woodworking environments, a system that almost works is a system waiting to fail.

  • Do your dust levels exceed exposure and combustible dust thresholds?

  • Is your ductwork able to maintain transport velocity with multiple machines?

  • Are your dust collectors engineered to handle high-volume production?

  • Is your system designed to prevent duct blockages and filter overloads?

  • Does dust accumulate in low-velocity runs, increasing fire and deflagration risk?
THE SOLUTION

How to Keep Sawdust From Creating Safety Hazards

US Duct designs systems around machine load, material type, capture requirements, and transport velocity.

  • Material-specific airflow engineering: CFM and velocity calculations based on machine type, material, and layout.
  • Application-matched hoods for table saws, shapers, wide-belt sanders, CNC routers, planers, and joiners.
  • Smooth interior ductwork that minimizes accumulation in fine-dust environments.

  • Cyclones and dust collectors are sized for material volume, particle size, and collection cycle requirements.
  • Components such as a Spark Trap help mitigate fire hazards.
  • NFPA 664-informed layouts guided by woodworking combustible dust standards.
THE Benefits

What Should You Expect From Your Sawdust Collection System?

Dust collection is not just about moving air. It requires maintaining enough transport velocity to keep combustible particulates suspended across every branch and main trunk, even as multiple machines run at the same time.

US Duct designs, manufactures, and delivers complete woodworking dust collection systems from the capture point forward, accounting for machine type, material characteristics, facility layout, and collection capacity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have Questions About Sawdust Collection?

What information do I need to get an accurate woodworking dust collection quote?
Submit a dimensioned shop layout showing machine and collector placements, a list of tools with their port counts and diameters, the material type (e.g., MDF, dry wood), and the maximum number of machines running simultaneously. Include the HP and fan curve if reusing an existing collector.
How do I calculate CFM requirements for a multi-machine woodworking system?
Multiply the cross-sectional area of each machine's port by the required velocity, usually 4,000 to 4,500 FPM, to find individual CFMs. To find total system CFM, sum the requirements of only the maximum number of tools that will actually operate at the exact same time.
What makes woodworking dust collection different from other industrial dust control applications?
It must simultaneously transport massive volume extremes, from heavy chips to microscopic sander dust, using a single system. Additionally, wood dust is highly abrasive to duct walls and carries an exceptionally high risk of fire and explosion when suspended in air.
How does NFPA 664 affect woodworking dust collection system design and component selection?
It mandates smooth, noncombustible metal ducting to prevent dust buildup and restricts indoor collector placement without certified deflagration venting. It also requires isolation devices like back-draft dampers and abort gates to stop an explosion from traveling back into the shop.
Can US Duct design a system around an existing collector my customer already owns?
Yes. Provide the existing collector's horsepower, inlet/outlet diameters, and fan curve. US Duct's engineering team will design the new duct network to match that unit's static pressure capacity and maintain proper transport velocities.
What transport velocity is required for fine wood and MDF dust in ductwork runs?
Fine, dry wood dust requires a minimum velocity of 3,500 to 4,000 FPM to stay suspended. Heavy chips, damp waste, and dense, powdery MDF dust require a higher velocity of 4,000 to 4,500 FPM to prevent settling and line blockages.
How does dealer pricing and quoting work for woodworking system projects?
Dealers submit shop layouts and tool specs, and US Duct uses its DuctQuote platform to generate a 3D design, bill of materials, and project quote. This quote includes protected wholesale dealer margins, allowing easy bundling with machinery sales prior to direct job site delivery.

Before switching to US Duct, cleanup around our CNC routers was a constant battle. The new system helped improve airflow consistency and dramatically reduced dust buildup across the shop.

We do a lot of dust collection systems across the country. From very small, single indoor collectors connecting to a single machine to the largest plants in the Southeast connecting dozens of machines to 100K CFM collectors, we lay out and install systems of all sizes. One constant in those systems is the dust pipe, engineering, and excellent service we get from US Duct. Their designers are accurate and thorough, their materials are the highest quality and their service is prompt and professional. US Duct is our "go-to" for dust pipe, engineering, and all things ductwork.

US Duct was great to work with. The design process was simple and they took the time to get everything dialed in for our shop. The 3D drawings made reviewing the ducting design very easy. It only took a day to get the entire system together. Would definitely recommend to any other cabinet shop owners out there.

I wanted to share my experience working with US Duct. I have worked with US Duct from the time Steve McDaniel left his previous employer many years ago. I have enjoyed a close working relationship and excellent service with all the staff I have worked with at US Duct. [Duct] has provided stellar service and support.

I wanted to give you a heads up I just spoke to Upstate Door, and they are super happy you and your team made the pickup of their product all work out as this is my largest customer, and plan on trying to pipe the entire factory once they get all the workflow changes done and this will defiantly put a feather in your hat!!! We probably do not tell you enough that we always appreciate all that US Duct does because it has become a common practice for you to go the extra mile !! Thanks Again, Kyle.

Working with US Duct has been a fantastic experience for me and our team at J and G Machinery. We transitioned several years ago from our supplier Nordfab to US Duct and this experience has proven to be one of the best decisions for our company. The quick response, accurate 3D drawings for each project, pricing, and just the overall understanding of the support we needed as a company has been a huge determining factor in that this decision was correct for us as a company. Also, [the US Duct] team provide us with the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback which contributes to our team's overall effectiveness and success in the field. By doing this, it allows us to convey to our customers the correct dust pipe layouts that best fits what they are looking to achieve within their facility.
